Build Up.
These three quotes both allude to the fact that when the tribe was taken over by the Romans, the Queen and her daughters were treated horribly. Boudicca’s quote goes on from the BBC record that mentions that the Romans took over the tribe, causing the members to grow with hatred; and mentions how the tribe lost their freedom and that the tribe as a whole was ‘polluted’ by the Roman lust, rightfully angering them.
"It is not as a woman descended from noble ancestry, but as one of the people that I am avenging lost freedom, my scourged body, the outraged chastity of my daughters. Roman lust has gone so far that not our very persons, nor even age or virginity, are left unpolluted. |
"Boudicca was married to Prasutagus, ruler of the Iceni people of East Anglia. When the Romans conquered southern England in AD 43, they allowed Prasutagus to continue to rule. However, when Prasutagus died the Romans decided to rule the Iceni directly and confiscated the property of the leading tribesmen. They are also said to have stripped and flogged Boudicca and raped her daughters. These actions exacerbated widespread resentment at Roman rule." "The Romans flogged the queen, raped her daughters, and seized her possessions. The Iceni people were already restive; they resented the soldiers in their towns and the taxes they were forced to pay. The absence of the Roman governor, Gaius Suetonis Paulinus (he was in Wales, subduing the Druids,) emboldened them. Boudica raised a great army of Britons among the Iceni and other tribes." |
